On Tuesday, second grade participated in an American Indian Feast. In Social Studies we are currently learning about three American Indian tribes (Powhatan, Lakota Sioux, and soon the Pueblo Indians). While studying the Powhatan Indians of the Eastern Woodlands, students learned that the women farmed corn, beans, and squash (or the three sisters). At the feast, students had the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes including the three sisters.
After the delicious feast, we returned to our class make corn husk dolls. Together we discussed how American Indians used all the parts of both plants and animals in their environment to meet their needs. Needless to say, our students had a wonderful time building and eating many things that we have learned about in class! Thanks to our amazing parent (and grandparent!) volunteers who made this event possible!
